In fair Verona, where we lay our scene… yes, the Italian city of Verona is arguably most famous for being the location where Shakespeare’s tale of star crossed lovers Romeo & Juliet is set.  Verona lies around 80 km west of Venice, and while it is the lesser known city of the two, and perhaps less breathtaking, it is certainly able to hold its own. It boasts an impressive selection of monuments, historical buildings, and ancient sites – impressive enough that the city was listed on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Eating out/nightlife in Verona

In front of the Arena is the Piazza Bra, a huge square that boasts a bounty of bars, cafés, and restaurants. There is invariably a lively and fun atmosphere here – an al fresco glass of wine on the square is a great way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. Being a tourist-saturated part of the city, however, the Piazza can tend to be a little expensive. For a cheaper dining experience – and often a better one – stick to the quieter piazzas and less visited side streets, where you will find superb little trattoria serving fine Italian cuisine.

For evening entertainment, dancing and drinks, there is plenty of choice in Verona. There is ample opportunity to indulge in some laid back evening drinks, with delightful little taverns offering an evening of wine sampling. There are more buzzing bars along the Via Mazzini that offer a livelier evening and attract a younger crowd, these generally stay open till about 1.00 am (or 2.00am at the weekends). For nightclubs, the suburbs and outskirts of the city are the best option – there is certainly a more low-key vibe in the city centre.

Things to see/do in Verona

A visit to Verona would not be complete without a trip to the Arena. The Arena is an enormous Roman amphitheatre that can accommodate in the region of 25,000 visitors at one time, and it is regularly used for public occasions as well as theatre performances during the summer months.  Whether you are an opera buff or not, you can’t help but be moved by the performances here – the setting is so magical and the atmosphere so wonderful that you are sure to be blown away. Cheap seats begin at around €40, however if you want, there are more expensive options closer to the stage.

A visit to ‘Juliet’s Balcony’ is a major attraction for those traveling to Verona. There is a short passage to the balcony where Juliet is said to have stood and lamented for her Romeo, and this passageway is testimony to the popularity of the attraction, particularly among young lovers. Countless slips of paper bearing their amorous graffiti are posted all over the walls of the passage, a ritual that is seen to be good luck (perhaps they haven’t read the end of the play…). Another ‘good luck’ ritual is to touch the breasts of a Juliet statue that stands below the balcony.

Verona Car Hire offers you the chance to visit Venice and see the canals while you are in this part of Italy.
