Venice

Riddled with canals and gorgeous architecture, Venice is unlike any other city in the world. While tourists tend to crowd the streets more than locals do, it is easy to see why. The collage of 116 islands connected by over 400 bridges yields a breathtaking landscape. Venice also holds a rich history, being the centre of the masterpieces of Bellini, Titian, and Tintoretto.

While Venice doesn’t allow cars throughout its historic streets and canals, hiring a car in town to explore the surrounding area offers up some great historical curiosities. Just beyond Venice, drivers can cruise through Padua, Vicenza and Treviso. Those that are looking for a little more of a drive can pop on down to Florence and the Tuscany region of Italy. Keeping close to the city, visitors can also take the vaporetto to the popular spot of Lido.

Venice comes alive for Carnavale. The annual celebration just before the Lenten season draws in millions of visitors from all around the world. They all come to adorn masks and take in the scene of the popular event.

Eating Out in Venice

Venice’s picture postcard image translates through its many cafés and restaurants. Classic Italian dishes are mainly on restaurant menus. While tourist traps flood the city almost more than the actual canals do, diners can always find something in keeping with their price point and palette.

Things to see/do in Venice

At the centre of the city and the top sight to see radiates throughout Piazza San Marco. The stunner of the Piazza is the Basilica di San Marco, also known as the Church of Gold. During Venice’s flood season, Piazza San Marco is often underwater. The city along the canals predictably takes advantage of that fact. It is hard to turn down a singing gondola ride through the city’s famous Grand Canal or under the Rialto Bridge or Bridge of Sighs. Visitors to the city nearly underwater can stroll through the maze of streets, getting lost in the surrounding Venetian architecture. Heading into the Galleria Accademia produces awe moments at the city’s many masterpieces on display. The Palazzo Ducale or the Doge’s Palace is also a popular attraction in the city.

While driving in Venice is something of a rare occurrence,  those who need personal transportation while in the area can consult Argus Car Hire. Argus searches for the best deals so that traveller’s don’t overspend while on vacation in the Italian dream city.
