Orlando International Airport is situated 10km to the southeast of the central business district of Orlando. Orlando is a very popular city for visitors, and receives an influx of millions of people every year.
What to See?
A tonne of theme parks! Orlando is probably the theme park capital of the world and this includes the Happiest Place on the planet – Disney World! You can check out Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Winnie the Pooh and all of the other characters when you visit Orlando. Orlando is also home to the Seaworld Theme Park, Gatorland, and Wet and Wild Water Park, so the chances of becoming bored here are slightly decreased when you holiday here!
I’m amazed at what you can buy in the United States. Not just in terms of variety, but also the quantity of things that are out there that will tempt you to lose those wads of hard earned cash. You could be driving in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden a strip mall or an outlet turns up so you can part with your money in an insanely short amount of time. Apart from your Disney World souvenirs, there are heaps of strip malls where you can blow your entire life savings on pretty much anything you desire. If you are feeling the need to buy a heap of stuff, just make sure you are able to meet your baggage limits for your next flight out of Orlando!
Where to Stay & Eat?
Orlando has become a cosmopolitan city and a wide range of cuisines for every budget level have popped up all around the city. You could easily have food from a different country for every night of the month if you wanted to. From Japanese to Korean, and some Deep South specialities, there should be something on offer to satisfy your food craving. You may need to ingest a bit to give you energy to walk around the theme parks however!
I love the microbrew (or craft beer) scene in the States. I much prefer downing a pint of small scale beer rather than the mass produced stuff. It looks and tastes so much better! You only have to go downtown to check out some microbreweries. You will definitely find a massive selection of beer to wash down your meal. Something like the House of Beer, while sounding a bit obvious, is music to my ears!
Since travel and tourism is a cornerstone of the local economy, Orlando has one the largest number of hotels in the United States. This ranges from accommodation that caters for the budget conscious (including campgrounds and recreational vehicle resorts), to the ultra luxurious such as the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. Accommodation types caters for all visitors, especially families.
Where to Go?
If you’re feeling the need to burn off a large buffet lunch, there are many gardens and parks in Orlando where you can take a laid-back stroll. Otherwise wander around the districts and check out some of the local museums and arts culture.
Apart from the huge range of theme parks, Orlando also caters for the adventure seekers by offering numerous outdoor activities for adrenalin junkies. Things to burst the adrenal glands include flying in an open cockpit biplane or riding an airboat through the local swamps. For something more serene, there are also early morning balloon rides on offer to observe the central Florida landscape.
To the music of all sorts of genres at the local pubs, downtown night clubs, live music clubs that Orlando offers. There is also entertainment that caters for the kids as well.
The theme parks during peak times, such as school and public holidays – you’ll spend most of your time lining up!
