Gibraltar is a large karstic cape jutting from the southern tip of Spain, where Europe meets Africa. Dominated by its striking monolith (‘The Rock’), Gibraltar is just 5 kilometres in length, but contains some 143 caves, around 50km of roads, and miles of tunnel. Gibraltar’s history begins in ancient Greek mythology, when it was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules. In the beginning of the 1700s it was relinquished to the British Crown. Despite several attempts by the Spanish to regain it, Gibraltar has remained a British colony ever since.
