Barcelona became a household name in 1992 after hosting a spectacular Olympic Games, but there is a whole lot more to this lively city to experience. These days, it’s one of the most visited cities in Europe, and all for a good reason as I’m about to reveal below.
What to See?
The numerous buildings that were designed by Antoni Gaudi, who surely must have been intoxicated most of the time, judging by the bizarre architectural creations that came from his mind. One of the most famous is the La Sagrada Familia that dominates the Barcelona skyline and has been in construction for over a century. You can take an elevator to the top if you feel like a dose of vertigo. Other Gaudi creations include Parc Guell, Casa Batllo, and Casa Mila.
Probably one of the most famous shopping strips in the world is La Rambla – the long, tree lined pedestrian mall that caters for both locals and tourists alike. You can also view some of the bizarre human statues that occur at regularly spaced interviews on La Rambla, which include a man sitting on a toilet. Otherwise, Barcelona has a great range of shopping, from department stores to the small family shops.
Where to Stay & Eat?
Just like the shopping, Barcelona has a crazy amount of places to eat. And it’s not surprising, like most Latin based countries, the locals live to eat – and not eat to live. This could be in a high end restaurant, or an unpretentious tapas bar. Or if you’re lucky, like I have been, you could be invited into a home for a banquet that will cause you to check yourself in as excess baggage on your next flight!
You want to be right in the thick of the action, so Barcelona offers a huge range of accommodation options. The only reason you will need a room is to somehow catch up on sleep, trying to recover from the long days and nights of shopping, eating and partying. I for one, wasn’t in Barcelona to watch television! In fact, if you time your flights well enough, you might be able to avoid accommodation all together and just spend time having a great time!Like most of Spain, not much happens before midnight in terms of night life. I strongly suggest taking an afternoon siesta so you can survive the all night partying that might leave you searching for a liver transplant the next week. Barcelona has a dizzying variety of bars, clubs and other nightspots that will leave you partied out for the next year. Spaniards in general like to have a good time, and you’ll have no choice but to suck yourself into it! For a drink with a difference, have a sip from the Canaletes Fountain tap in La Rambla. Legend has it that if you drink from the Fountain, you will someday return to Barcelona. I think this is true, because I’ve drunk from the fountain, and have been to Barcelona twice!
Where to Go?
Just walk around the city. Take the extensive and reliable metro to an outer suburb and just lose yourself in the daily goings on of Barcelona life. You will be surprised where your walks may take you. Barcelona is one of those cities experienced best on foot, so you can soak it all in.
Take a day trip north of Barcelona to check out the villages of the Costa Brava. This is a nice way to chill out before preparing for the party onslaught back in Barcelona when you return.
The number of music nightspots is directly proportional to the number of party venues providing them. Go to a disco, see a live band, but you will most likely need earplugs to defend yourself against the musical assault on your ears.
Calling the Barcelona locals Spaniards. They’re Catalans! The locals are fiercely proud of the Catalonia region, and you will see the Catalan flag being displayed on the streets more than the Spanish flag. And don’t wear your Real Madrid football team shirt on the street. You might end up in the annual Darwin Award list! Only Futbol Club Barcelona shirts allowed!
