Avignon Car Hire
Avignon is a beautiful French city lying on the banks of the Rhône in the heart of the southern region of Vaucluse. The city is famous for its rich religious heritage, having been the Papal seat for six consecutive terms from 1309 until 1378 when the papacy returned to Rome. Avignon has also faced a myriad of natural adversaries including violent, savage winds, fire and floods – the evidence of which can be seen throughout the city in the streets, the architecture and the landscape of the area. Plague, plunder and pillaging have all played their part in creating the historical landscape of Avignon, but despite the misfortune that the city has suffered it is nonetheless a superbly well-preserved place – one of the best in France.

Eating out/nightlife in Avignon
The restaurants in Avignon cover a broad spectrum, with every style and price range represented well, from budget cheap eats to mid range and casual eateries right through to fine dining and haute cuisine. As one would expect from a French city, the local gastronomy is approached with care and respect, a fact that is duly reflected in the sumptuous offerings on menus throughout Avignon. The city centre is the place to go for a wide range of restaurants, however the upscale restaurants here are particularly highly reputed. For budget dining, wander the back streets to find a little spot where the locals eat.
Evening entertainment in Avignon is an eclectic affair, whatever your age/taste/musical preferences. Opera buffs and techno freaks alike will find themselves catered to here, as well as everyone in between. Its not wild, abandoned hedonism you will find at night in Avignon – but you can expect good clean fun!

Things to see/do in Avignon
There is plenty to see in and do in and around Avignon, particularly when you have the benefit of Avignon Car Hire. In the city itself there are wonderful buildings, museums and galleries exhibiting stunning works of art as well as telling the fascinating story of a city so richly steeped in culture and religious history. The cultural and historical importance of the city has lead to it being listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Avignon’s main attractions include the Palais des Papes and Petit Palais, the Chapelle St Jean, the Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral, and of course the famous Pont D’Avignon, immortalized in the famous French children’s song.
The bridge has descended into disrepair over years of furious flooding, and now only four arches out of he original twenty-two are still standing. It is nevertheless still a lovely attraction tat offers wonderful vistas of the river and surrounding countryside. Admission to the bridge is cheap and includes an audio guide that details some of the local history. A free ferry operates on the river every fifteen minutes that will bring people to the Isle de la Barthelasse that lies midway across the Rhône. Here you will enjoy some views of the locale from a different perspective.
